PAWS Week

Background:
This was a week-long project which was mainly conducted to raise funds for two non-profit animal welfare organizations: TNRM and Furry Friends Farm. This event was also conducted to raise awareness on animal abuse and cruelty.
Awareness was raised through an exhibition board about animal cruelty.


Objectives:
-Raise awareness about animal cruelty and abuse

-Raise funds for Trap-Neuter-Release-Manage (TNRM)and Furry Friends Farm 


Details:
Funds were raised through the selling of food and beverages as well as a games corner. The food and beverages included mashed potato, jelly, fried crab sticks and fizzy lemonade.
Four games were held, which were: Save the Animal game, Angry Bird catapult game and an egg basket game.

The Save the Animal game involved fishing out tiny bottles, which had animal prints on them, out of the water. The participant was given 1 minute to fish out a minimum of 4 bottles using a handmade fishing rod. If the participant managed to fish 4 bottles, 1 point was awarded to that participant. If the participant managed to fish more than 4 bottles (there was a maximum of 7 bottles), he/she was awarded with 2 points.

The Angry Bird catapult game required the participant to shoot down small plastic yakult bottles (pictures of poachers were pasted on each) using a handmade chopstick gun and a rubber band. The participant was given three tries and was awarded 1 point for every bottle he/she shoots down.

The egg basket game involved the participant throwing a ping pong ball into and egg tray. This egg tray was colored in some holes only. Therefore if the ball fell in the colored hole, the participant was awarded one point.  Here also the participant was given 3 tries.

Points for all these games were given in the form on a handmade origami cat/dog. These points could be exchanged for gifts. 3 points could be exchanged for a bookmark, cream samples and vouchers.
10 points could be exchanged for goody bags and 40 points could be exchanged for a hamper.

Recycling Awareness Campaign

Event Date: Campaign: 3rd-5th September 2014, Prize-giving ceremony of Lantern making competition: 9th September 2014 , Categorisation and selling of recyclables: 13th September 2014
Campaign: 10am-4pm, Prize-giving ceremony of Lantern making competition: 3pm , Categorisation and selling of recyclables: 10am-3pm
Location : Campaign: Monash University Malaysia (In Front of Auditorium 1)

No. of Participants: 23 Monash University Malaysia Leo Club members and 200 Monash students and staff

Background:
Recycling Awareness Campaign was organized to raise awareness among students and staff of Monash about the correct ways and importance of recycling in conservation of our environment. This event also aimed at showing various ways of reusing and turning wastes into decorative items.

Hence, a lantern-making competition was organized and the main rule of this competition was to use recyclable and reusable materials to make the lanterns.

Objectives : 
-To raise awareness among students and staff on the importance of recycling to protect our environment

To educate the students and staff on the correct way of recycling and waste disposal

To show the various ways in which waste can be reused and remade into decorative items

Details :
 Voting for the top 5 lanterns from the top 8 lanterns submitted was conducted on all 3 days of the event. On 9 September, a prize-giving ceremony was held, the top 5 winners were announced and prizes were handed out to the participants.

Exhibition and some games based on recycling were carried out in order to raise awareness about recycling. Small prizes were given out to the games participants. Besides that, Monash Green Representative Network (GRN) participatedin this campaign by helping in collecting recyclables from students andthey also conducted a survey to know where are the prime places where recycle bins should be put on campus. Categorization of recyclables collected from Monash campus and Monash GRN club during the campaign was carried out on 13th of September and the recyclables were sold to a recycling company-Epistar Industry. A total of RM341 was earned by selling the recyclables, which was used to cover the expenses of the campaign and the rest are to be donated to Global Environment Centre.

Visitation to Malaysian Association for the Blind (MAB)

Background:
The Malaysian Association for the Blind ( MAB) is the premier voluntary organization in Malaysia serving visually impaired persons. It provides services that help the blind and prevent the tragedy of avoidable blindness. Established in 1951 by the then Department of Social Welfare to look after the general well-being of blind persons in the country, MAB has since carried out this role and much more. Its activities have extended from Kuala Lumpur to other parts of the country. These include educational programmes , rehabilitation courses, vocational training and placement service. In addition, MAB also runs a Braille library, a "talking" book library, a Braille Publishing Unit, an Information Technology Centre, Resource Centre and a Sale and Production Unit to name a few.

Objectives:
-Increase literature library of the blind

-To learn, experience and understand the process of producing literary materials for the blind

-To observe the wish of the visually impaired in enriching their knowledge through reading

Details:
Upon arrival, the Leo members were divided into two groups. Four members were chosen to do audio recordings of novels, which will enable the visually-impaired to listen to the audiobooks. The remaining members helped to type out novels, which will eventually be converted into Braille by the Malaysian Association for the Blind

Overall, the event was considered a success as the event went smoothly as per the itinerary.

Blood Donation Drive

Event Date: Promotional and Awareness Campaign:(21st – 22nd, 25th – 26th August 2014) Blood Donation Drive:(27th August 2014)

No.of Participants: 13 Monash University Leo Club members and 77 Monash students and staffs

Background:
This event was a collaboration between the Leo Club of Monash University , Monash Student Wellbeing and Activities Department and the University of Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC)

                                                                 
Objectives:

-To ease the lack of blood supplies at the University of Malaya Medical Centre

-To raise awareness about the causes and prevention of dengue

Details:

In the four school days leading up to the Blood Donation Drive, a booth was set up in front of the campus bookstore in order to promote the event as well as to raise awareness about dengue. Short clips were projected each day for about an hour in order to encourage Monash students and staff to donate their blood.

During the day of the Blood Donation Drive, a total of seven (7) Leo members helped to distribute feedback forms to the donors. These feedback forms were prepared by Monash Student Wellbeing and Activities and will be used by them accordingly. By the end of the day, the event as a whole managed to get 77 donors.

Overall, the event was considered a success since a total of 77 donors was achieved in just one day alone.
