Kluang Trip

- To gain knowledge about sheep and goat farm

- To be grateful the environment and enjoy the nature

- A bonding opportunity among the members

Details:
On the first day Monash University Leo Club Members gathered at the university foyer, where we registered and got on the bus. After 3 hours journey, we reached UK Farm in Kluang which is the first activity of the trip. We went around the different areas which included, goat feeding and milking as well as feeding the ostriches and learning how the orang asli live. It was enjoyable as many of the participants saw and experienced new things e.g. Goats milk and ice cream. After the tour, the participants were dropped off at the hotel to freshen up before dinner. Games were played during dinner as part of the fellowship among members.

The next morning, the participants gathered in the hotel lobby at 7:00am for a light breakfast before departing for the hike at Gunung Lambak the second activity of the trip. After the hike which lasted about 2 hours, participants were dropped back at the hotel to shower, change and pack before checking out and heading for lunch. Once lunch was over, we headed over to the final activity of the trip which was the Rock House Visitation. The Rock House is a centre for the underpriviledged where there are around 50 children there. We played games with the children and helped to clean up and organise the house. The participants were divided into two groups where the first group went out to play with the children and the second group stayed back to clean. The Rock House Visitation ended at around 4:30pm where the participants gathered back on the bus and headed back to Sunway.

Raja Musa Tree Planting

Background:
The Raja Musa Forest Reserve Rehabilitation Programme is a collaborative effort between the Selangor Forestry Department (Selangor FD) and Global Environment Centre (GEC) funded by HSBC Bank Malaysia Berhad. 
The Global Environment Centre (GEC) is a non-profit organisation, established in 1998 to address key environmental issues of global importance – such as climate change, biodiversity and water resources. GEC is based in Malaysia but supports activities worldwide. Its key approach is to bring together multi-stakeholder partnerships involving communities, government agencies, private sector and others to address common environmental challenges.

Objectives:

·         - To raise awareness on preserving the environment and to tackle environmental issues such as global warming

·         - Gain practical experience on replanting trees in peat swamp forest, which had previously undergone deforestation and requires remediation.

Details:
Leo Club Monash University Members gathered at the foyer and departed on time to Raja Musa Forest Reserve where we drove in 6 cars. We arrive for registration and members were given bread and water and a briefing on the forest reserve and instructions were given on how to plant the seedlings.

The tree planting started at 10:00am straight after the briefing. The members were put into 4 groups and were allocated a lane each which consisted about 30+ trees. Planting the trees involved digging holes, placing the seedlings in and placing the designated markers in and filling back the hole to make sure the plant is secure. The terrain was quite different then what we had expected as there were many branches and small streams which we had to cross. Leos managed to plant over 210 trees.

At the end of activity, Leos departed back to Sunway for lunch and fellowship among the members.

PAWS Visitation

Location: PAWS Animal Welfare Society Centre, Pilmoor Estate, Subang Airport Road, 47200 Subang, Selangor, Malaysia

Background:
PAWS (Paws Animal Welfare Society) was founded in 1987 by a small group of local and expatriate volunteers. Through their generosity and imagination, PAWS was constructed on a patch of land owned by Sime Plantations on the Subang Airport Road. This distinct group of sheds and a courtyard still stands today and currently homes around 400 cats and dogs.

Objectives:

- Render services to the community

- To have compassion for animals

- Foster relationship with helpers at the PAWS Animal Welfare Society Centre

- Foster a connection between participants and animals

- Fellowship among members in the Leo Club

Details:
The members on these two days volunteered to clean cages and to walk dogs. On each day, 2 groups of members were formed and assigned to separate jobs. These tasks included washing dog bowls, cleaning cat cages, taking them for a walk and after having the opportunity to wash the dogs after.

After the volunteering service in PAWS, the volunteers had a fellowship lunch together in order for the members to relax and chit-chatting after the event before heading back to Monash University.

Dai Victoria Follow-Up Visitation

Background:

Dai Victoria Learning Centre is a centre for the underprivileged. The legal status of refugees and asylum seekers of approximately 100,000 people from Myanmar are not recognized in Malaysia. United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) estimates that only 6,000 out of 15,000 Myanmar school age children have access to basic education in learning centers set up by their community groups and NGO’s, since they are not allowed to attend local schools.

Objectives:
- Providing a safe and better learning environment for the children
- Community engagement and interaction
- Getting to know first-hand the plight of children with refugee status in Malaysia

Details:
Arrived at Dai Victoria by 11.30 am and started the day by firstly serving lunch to the children. Lunch was prepared in a buffet style and included a range of delicacies such as creamy chicken, mixed veggies, fried egg, rice and in addition to that, a refreshing drink was served to the children. Next, an informational talk was given by the members educating the children on basic mannerisms needed in their daily lives. A colorful and attractive poster was made detailing the various good habits that helped in the talk.

The visitation progressed with the members playing games with the children such as pinning the tail on the donkey, red and green light, charades and drop a handkerchief. The games session ended with everyone laughing and enjoying themselves; especially the children. The donated items consisted of stationery inclusive of drawing (A3) pads, a set of writing and colored pencils, a box of erasers and a set of exercise books handed over to the care taker, Mr. Victor. The event concluded at 2.45pm.

Community Engagement Week

Details:
Community Engagement Week was a event set up by Monash University Malaysia which took in Monash itself. Leo Club only took part on the first day A booth was set up along side other NGO's as well as MUVP. Our booth was specifically set up to promote Leo Club and also to inform the community on what Leo Club does.

On that same day, A speech was given by guest speaker Lion Dr. Anthony Ng from Make-A-Wish Malaysia, who explained on the subject of "How To Be A Good Steward" as well as his experiences and projects.
