Visitation to PAWS Animals Shelter

On 29 September, Organizing Chairperson Leo Lee Ann June together with 7 other Leo members went on a trip to Paws Animals Shelter in Subang. It was indeed a fruitful trip where volunteers get to know more about the shelter's condition and the very reason why it was set up for.

As early as 8 AM, all the Leos gathered at Monash entrance. With volunteers, Leo Melissa, Leo June and Leo AnnDee, everyone arrived at the shelter even before the shelter has begun open.

After a short briefing and signing up the forms, all the Leos set out to Walk the Dogs and wash them after that. All in all, the Leos walked and washed up an estimated 50 grown up dogs. Not only so, the Leos also washed up the shelter a bit...

We being human, has our responsibility in their existence. We may love them when we want to.. But what happens when we get tired of them? Some people just leave them stray and some suffered injury.. Due to that, some people thinks they are annoying and may bring disease, therefore the government has to put them in the pound. Thats where the Shelter comes in. The shelter has to put some of the Dogs to sleep if the population gets over-populated..

Sad to say... the shelter has no choice but to either put them to sleep or let them suffer out there in the community where they starve, they get stoned, they get knocked down by cars, or even slaughtered as delicacy...

Following are pictures taken there... Hope you enjoy it... Lets do our part by adopting the pets there... AND make sure the next time if YOU want to buy a pet.. THINK in a Long term~

27 September 2008 @ SMK Batu Lapan

SMK Batu Lapan was somewhere unfamiliar but eight of our members took the initiative to attend the Regional Council Committee (RCC) Meeting in said place on the 27th of September 2008 (Saturday). The registration fees of only RM5 included a breakfast, of a Milo packet and cake, and a lunch. (Such an odd time to be talking about registration fees… Haha!) Anyway, those who attended from our club were: Garry, Melissa, Sharon, Yi Peng, Kenny, Chee Fei, Joeanne, and Ann June.

At 9.20 a.m. the RCC meeting for Leo’s was called to order by Lion Chan Kee Oi, of Region 4. The President of SMK Batu Lapan (Leo Vivien) led the Leo Pledge; and their secretary was appointed The Secretary for this 1st RCC meeting. Lion Chan Kee Oi made the roll call with about 20 Leo Clubs from Region 4 and the attending Lions. Of course, all Leo’s responded with three hearty roars!

Wow... It really was a big grand meeting. Imagine being in the presence of many other Leo's who are striving for what you strive and serving the community just as you are doing. It must feel great!

Health Awareness Week

I believe that awareness is created when you are doing something with the knowledge you have. That means simply knowing too!

Last week (that is, from the 23rd to the 25th of September 2008) the National Blood Bank and the National Kidney Foundation were invited to our university for this very purpose. They brought with them the reasons for blood donation, how does it work, and what is expected of blood donors; the need for organ donation, to know the finer details about your own health (besides 'feeling fine') and the need to keep your health in check. That week may be a tad bit hectic for most as they happily and graciously donated their own blood for the good of others; in between attending classes and rushing for their assignments! (Many thanks and gratefulness from us all!)

Enough said. I shall now present to you captured moments of the event. Enjoy. ;)

Once again, I would like to extend our thanks
to those who had a health screen,
to those who donated blood (and those who wanted to but can't),
to the members of the LEO club who helped out mending the booth,
the organizing committees, (you guys are the best!)
the administrators,
the event managers,
the maintenance,
the security, and
all approving bodies!

Ever grateful,
Carolyn.

Peace Poster Competition

On 28 September 2008, marked the Peace Poster competition jointly by The Leo Club of Monash University and our sponsoring Lions Club, Lions Club of PJ Mutiara at One World Hotel, Damansara Utama. With the theme this year, 'Peace begins with Me', the competition was well responded by the public! The response was tremendously overwhelming!

As early as 8.00 AM, eager parents, as well as their children are already at the concourse area awaiting to register themselves to partake the annual Peace poster competition. The Competition was indeed an intense one! Amazingly, the children, unaffected by one another, drew and colored to their best and took the breath of many who see their work!

The panel of judges were District Chairperson for Peace Poster Contest, Lion Tan Guat Beng, Mr Jason Chan and Ms Lee Soon Cheng. Oraganising Chairperson from Lions Club of PJ Mutiara, Lion Kam Poh Ling, as well as not forgetting Leo Club of Monash University's counter part, Leo Sharon both has co-ordinated well and the event was a success!

Here are some Pictures!

Fund raised~

Hi! It’s time I blog about the recent happenings in the club again. I believe we all know the club has recently embarked on a journey of fund-raising. The club owes it to Leo Evan Yip! A round of applause for him!

Through this fund-raising project, I have personally witness a strong will and great sense of responsibility from him. Of course, the project also owes many who have helped out in making this project a success. Some who hide behind the curtains and make this success a success. Others, who helped out at the booth~

The event began with plans and then executed starting on Sunday evening, where all the ingredients are bought and brought to Leo Garry’s house for preparation. Cook Kenny, a.k.a. our club treasurer has been of great help by contributing his wonderful recipe of Herbal eggs! For those who have tasted it, knows how good it is. The event also owes to Leo Lina, who seeded the idea of selling sweet corn to raise fund! It was indeed among the highlights of fundraising! Idea without execution is of course nothing. Thanks to Leo Yeung Yung Lin, who was willing to arrange the cups, spoons and the wonderful steamer!

On top of that, the event also has to thank Leo Chee Fei for lending his super-big pots for the now famous ‘Lin Chi Kang’. So much said, the event cannot forget those who lend their car and effort to help bring all the stuffs from LEVEL 5 to the car and from the car to the University! These kind and hardworking people includes Leo Victor Yu, Leo Satish and Leo Shaun! THANKS!

What’s more, Leo Satish inadvertedly surprised everyone by baking 2 huge boxes of cupcakes for the club to raise fund. Not only the contribution of forking out money to bake the cupcakes, but the effort. The effort really touched some of us in the club. Leo Joeanne, expressed her gratitude as the Tropicana Leader.

Morever, fellow Leos who also helped in the planning and executing the plan like Leo Jack Seow, and Leo Fong Boon Hoe, who are there every time help is needed. Not forget to mention those not from Tropicana, Leo June Lim, Leo Carolyn who are there almost every day to assist organizing chairperson in making this event a success. Still, there are many names to mention. Our club is blessed to have the twin sisters who helped at the booth without sign of tiredness; Leo Yi Peng & Yi Mei.

From the event, I myself have seen the many will. Some strong, some weak. But in all, we have come thru it together. It’s for the society. A club with over 70 members should have 70 over participations. But, in the light of the event, we see the revelation of what was once shared by Lion Nelson. In a club, we have 3 kinds of members.

1. The ones who actively partake in the ENTIRE event.

2. The kind who wait and see this happen.

3. The kind who DON’T even know what is going on.

Type 2 and 3, don't lose hope. You chance and turn will come. Just strive to be type 1 any time in the near future! We all will be given the chance to SERVE~

Not forgetting the event managed to raise RM 400 within 4 days. Though not a huge amount, but it was a learning experience. I bear witness to the growth of a man. In times of hardship is when we see the true faces of many. Let’s continue to be UNITED and SERVE!!! Leo Club of Monash University. ROAR!~ ROAR!~ ROAR!~
