PAWS Visitation

Event Date: Monday, 30th September, 2013 - Tuesday, 1st October, 2013
Time: 8:00am - 12:00pm
Location: PAWS Animal Welfare Society Centre, Pilmoor Estate, Subang Airport Road, 47200 Subang, Selangor, Malaysia

Background:
PAWS (Paws Animal Welfare Society) was founded in 1987 by a small group of local and expatriate volunteers. Through their generosity and imagination, PAWS was constructed on a patch of land owned by Sime Plantations on the Subang Airport Road. This distinct group of sheds and a courtyard still stands today and currently homes around 400 cats and dogs.

Objectives:
- Render services to the community
- To have compassion for animals
Foster relationship with helpers at the PAWS Animal Welfare Society Centre
- Foster a connection between participants and animals
- Fellowship among members in the Leo Club

Details:
The members on these two days volunteered to clean cages and to walk dogs. On each day, 2 groups of members were formed and assigned to separate jobs. These tasks included washing dog bowls, cleaning cat cages, taking them for a walk and after having the opportunity to wash the dogs after.

After the volunteering service in PAWS, the volunteers had a fellowship lunch together in order for the members to relax and chit-chatting after the event before heading back to Monash University.

Dai Victoria Follow-Up Visitation

Event Date: Saturday, 28th September, 2013
Time: 8:30am - 2:30pm

No. of Participants: 20 Monash University Leo Club, Malaysia Members 

Background:
Dai Victoria Learning Centre is a centre for the underprivileged. The legal status of refugees and asylum seekers of approximately 100,000 people from Myanmar are not recognized in Malaysia. United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) estimates that only 6,000 out of 15,000 Myanmar school age children have access to basic education in learning centers set up by their community groups and NGO’s, since they are not allowed to attend local schools.

Objectives:
- Providing a safe and better learning environment for the children
- Community engagement and interaction
- Getting to know first-hand the plight of children with refugee status in Malaysia

Details:
Arrived at Dai Victoria by 11.30 am and started the day by firstly serving lunch to the children. Lunch was prepared in a buffet style and included a range of delicacies such as creamy chicken, mixed veggies, fried egg, rice and in addition to that, a refreshing drink was served to the children. Next, an informational talk was given by the members educating the children on basic mannerisms needed in their daily lives. A colorful and attractive poster was made detailing the various good habits that helped in the talk.

The visitation progressed with the members playing games with the children such as pinning the tail on the donkey, red and green light, charades and drop a handkerchief. The games session ended with everyone laughing and enjoying themselves; especially the children. The donated items consisted of stationery inclusive of drawing (A3) pads, a set of writing and colored pencils, a box of erasers and a set of exercise books handed over to the care taker, Mr. Victor. The event concluded at 2.45pm.

Community Engagement Week

Event Date: Tuesday, 24th November, 2013

Location: Monash University, Malaysia

Details:
Community Engagement Week was a event set up by Monash University Malaysia which took in Monash itself. Leo Club only took part on the first day A booth was set up along side other NGO's as well as MUVP. Our booth was specifically set up to promote Leo Club and also to inform the community on what Leo Club does.

On that same day, A speech was given by guest speaker Lion Dr. Anthony Ng from Make-A-Wish Malaysia, who explained on the subject of "How To Be A Good Steward" as well as his experiences and projects.

Protecting Animals Welfare Society (PAWS) Week Fundraiser

Event Date: Monday, 9th September, 2013 - Thursday, 12th September, 2013
Time: 10:00am - 4:00pm
Location: Monash University Malaysia
Organizing Chairperson: Leo Than Mei Ying
No. of Participants: 25 Monash University Leo Club Malaysia Members

Details:

This event was a 4 days long that comprised of fund-raising through selling food; such as fruits, brownies and coconuts, as well as through games which the public could play.


Objectives for this event as follows:
  • CREATE and RAISE AWARENESS among the public regarding the balance between human and wildlife.
  • RAISE FUNDS to purchase essential needs for Madam Kang

Background of Madam Kang: 

Madam Kang Gaik Kee takes care of about 200 dogs on her own in Kamunting, Perak. She is in her late 60's and is extremely devoted to taking care of the stray dogs she takes in. Despite not working and living solely on her pension, she still has the generosity of heart to continue taking care of the dogs and using most of her pension on the dogs.

OHSE Week

Event Date: Monday 26th August, 2013 - Tuesday 27th August, 2013\
Time: 10:00am - 4.00pm
Location: Monash University, Malaysia
Organizing Chairperson: Leo Leonard Lim
No. of Participants: 22 Monash University Leo Club, Malaysia Members

Background:
OHSE which stands for Occupational Health, Safety & Environment, was a week jointly organised by Monash University Leo Club, Green Representative Network and Monash University Volunteer Program; all of which are Monash University Clubs. Our club's main theme was RECYCLING.

Objectives:
The objectives which Monash University Leo Club set out to achieve for this event were:
- To raise awareness about recycling in campus
- To educate people about information related to recycling

Details:
For this 2 day event, our club set up 2 booths. the first booth was an exhibition containing interesting facts on recycling and information on where the recycling bins are located in our university. Along with the first booth, there were also examples of recycled items turned into everyday objects.

The second booth that was set-up had 2 games which were made up by the committee. The first game was sorting out items which could be recycled, placing them into the correct sorting boxes and the non-recyclable items in the box marked "non-recyclable". The second game which was set up was a short 5 question Multiple Choice Questions which were based on the information provided on the board. Each player was given 20 seconds to complete the quiz.

As this event was a joint event, the other clubs had game booths of their own. Prizes would be given out to players who won at least 3 games.

Orientation, Installation and Initiation

Event Date: Saturday, 24th August, 2013
Time: 8:30am - 5:30pm

Location: Monash University Malaysia
Organizing Chairperson: Leo Wong Zhi Wyai
No. of Participants: 50 Monash University Leo Club Members, 6 Lion Cabinet Officers and 5 Club Alumni

Objectives of The Event:
  • To ENHANCE members understanding of the background of Leo Club
  • To INITIATE members to become an official Leo Club member
  • To INSTALL new Board of Directors for the fiscal year 2013-2014


The event commenced with registration of the members at 8.30am. At around 9.20a.m, CLD speaker Lion Marcus conducted the orientation and assessment. After that, the Lions and members proceeded to lunch catered from Lunchbox.

At 1.35p.m, Leo President, Leo Lim Qian Ru called the meeting to order. Leo Chew Yi-Zheng spoke on behalf of Immediate Past Vice President Leo Jeffrey Tiw, wishing the Board of Directors of 2013-2014 to do their best in serving the club. Then, the MC led the Board of Directors year 2012-2013 forward for the stepping down ceremony. Next, Lion Leo Advisor, Nelson Wong conducted the initiation ceremony where 29 members were initiated. Lion Nelson also gave his speech after the initiation.

Later, it was the installation ceremony conducted by Lions’ Club President, Lion Jessie Ng, and gave her speech shortly after. Leo President, Leo Lim Qian Ru gave her acceptance speech as well and hope that the Board of Directors 2012-2013 can work closely together to achieve and give more to the community. Leo Awards were also presented later by Lion Leo Advisor 2012-2013, Irene Hoi; followed the Leo Forum Awards and CLD certificates by Regional Committee Chairperson of Leos Region 8, Nelson Wong.

Lastly, Leo Lim Qian Ru presented certificates as appreciation for the Lions who attended the event. The meeting was adjourned at 3.05p.m. Lions and members had photographing sessions followed by games sessions later. The event ended at around 5.30p.m.

Tara Bhavan Visitation

 Tara Bhavan Children's Home
 
Background:

Tara Bhavan is a home for underprivileged children set up by Ms. Poonam Kukreja. This home was first established roughly 14 years ago on 14th February, 1999. This establishment houses children that are either orphans or have been abandoned as well as children from very poor and broken homes. Whilst under the care of Tara Bhavan, the children have the opportunity to start a new life. The Main objective of Tara Bhavan is to give shelter and comfort to children from poor and disturbed environments as they believe that children should be given a chance to grow up in a healthy, educative and highly motivated environment.

Objectives for this event as follows:
  • To DONATE the funds raised from the Gatsby Murder Mystery Theme Fundraiser Party that took place during the previous fiscal year
  • To PROVIDE a better living condition for the children
  • To HAVE A GOOD TIME with the children

 Lunch with the children 



  Games i.e Pass The Parcel, and Arts and Craft Session

 Handing out goodie bags to the children

Handing over of donations to one of the caretakers; Miss. Uma. Items included, groceries and snacks, as well as a blender and gas cooker.

Fellowship Night



Event Date: Friday, 16th August, 2013
Time: 6:00pm - 10:00pm
Location: Monash University Malaysia
Organizing Chairperson: Leo Michelle Wong Mei and Leo Ang Hooi Nee
No. of Participants: 43 Monash University Leo Club Members

Objectives for the event as follows:
  • To allow new members to LEARN more about Monash University Leo Club Malaysia
  • To PROVIDE A PLATFORM for the new coming club members to BUILD and BOND friendship, and mutual understanding among each other and current members.
Details:

The purpose of this event was to build FRIENDSHIP among members and to have fun at the same time. 
The evenings events included the following:
  • Ice Breaking Games
  • Dinner
  • Task Completion Competition 
The Ice Breaking Games were intended for both new members and old members to bond and get to know each other through games and introducing themselves.


For Task Completion, groups of 6 were formed and each group was given a facilitator. There were a certain number of tasks which each group had to complete and take a picture of to prove they had successfully completed it. The winner was awarded a prize while the last group received a penalty.

1st General Meeting for 2013-2014 Fiscal Year

Apologies for the late blog updates!

Our first general meeting for the 2013-2014 fiscal year was held on Tuesday 13th August, 2013, with an attendance of 58 member.

First off on the agenda was a welcoming speech by the new president Leo Lim Qian Ru, who introduced herself and all the new Board of Directors.

After the warm welcome, passed projects and activities were discussed which included Clubs and Societies week and Monash University Leo Club Malaysia's 10th year anniversary dinner.

Followed by up-coming projects which included Fellowship night, Tara Bhavan Visitation and Orientation, Initiation and Installation.


Lastly on the agenda was the introduction of the three sub-groups at Monash University Leo Club Malaysia. The three groups are PAWS(Protecting Animals Welfare Society), Humanity and Tropicana and each Group has a different objective.
